Nicotine is not the only substance in tobacco that has drug-like effects. Other drugs that act on the brain in a similar way are also present in tobacco and some of these are potentially even more addictive than nicotine.

The main one is called nornicotine. Other similar ones are anabaseine, anatabine, cytisine, myosmine and anabasine.

Nornicotine is similar to nicotine but is much less harmful. It is found in higher concentrations in cigar and cigarette smoke than nicotine, but in much lower concentrations in smokeless tobacco.

It is also present, in small amounts, in the tobacco plant.

Nornicotine acts in a similar way to nicotine but is not as addictive and does not cause cancer. However, it is potentially more harmful than nicotine as it can increase your heart rate and blood pressure.
