Types of Dendritic Cells
Follicular Dendritic Cell (FD) – These are the most common type of dendrite cell found in the brain. They are present in all parts of the brain including the cerebellum. FDs have been shown to play a role in memory formation and learning.
They are involved in the regulation of behavior, mood, emotions and cognition.
Macrophage (M) – Macrophages are specialized white blood cells that engulf foreign antigens such as bacteria or viruses. They are also involved in the killing and elimination of cancer cells. Dendritic cells phagocytize antigens and present them on its surface to T-cells.
Plasmacytoid Dendritic Cell (PD) – Plasmacytoid dendritic cells are activated by interferon-alpha and -beta during an immune response. They are a type of professional antigen presenting cells responsible for generating specific immunity to viruses. They are also involved in the elimination of cancer cells.
Langhans Type (L) – This cell is a rare cell that can be found in the spleen and lymph nodes. It is a type of dendritic cell that is found in the red pulp of the spleen. They are also found in the marginal zone of the spleen and the white pulp of the lymph nodes.
Mesenchymal (MES) – These cells can produce large quantities of cytokines and play an important role in the activation and growth of T-cells. They are also involved in the activation of B-cells and can kill virus-infected cells.
Stromal (St) – These cells are also rare and can be found in the lymph nodes. They were discovered in 1996. They are named after the stroma of tissue that supports other cells in an organ.
They produce cytokines and play an important role in the activation of naive T-cells.
These cells are very important in the immune response by helping to eliminate infected cells and presenting antigens on their surface to other immune cells. The above information provides an overview of the different types of dendritic cells in the human body.
