What is the 5:2 Diet?
The 5:2 Diet is a low carbohydrate, high fat (LCHF) eating plan. LCHF stands for Low Carb High Fat. The name comes from the fact that your body burns through stored fats rather than carbs when it needs energy. Your body will burn through carbohydrates if you eat too many of them, but not on a day where you are fasting or have no food available.
It’s not just about losing weight though; it’s about improving your overall health. By reducing your carb intake, you’ll improve insulin sensitivity and reduce inflammation.
You may even see improvements in blood sugar levels and cholesterol levels. If you’re looking to lose weight, then the ketogenic diet might work well for you because it helps with both goals!
Why would I want to do this?
If you’ve ever tried the Atkins diet, then you probably noticed how difficult it is to stick to. It requires a lot of willpower and it doesn’t always feel good. The keto diet isn’t quite as restrictive, but it does require some effort on your part. There are several benefits of doing this type of eating plan:
You get rid of all those pesky carbs that make you crave sweets and breads.
You can eat fat for every meal and feel full and satisfied.
It’s easier to stick to than the Atkins diet.
You can have a glass of wine every once in awhile (in a few months).
You increase your daily activity by walking an extra mile or two throughout the day.
What are the rules?
The only real hard rule is that you must fast every other day. On your fasting days, you can’t eat anything with more than 50 calories. Make sure to drink plenty of water and tea. You are allowed to drink coffee on these days without any limitations. The only foods that you can generally have are eggs, meat, and vegetables. Carbs and even protein are very limited (but not completely eliminated).
On your feeding days, you can eat whatever you want within reason.
