The company was founded in 1879 by Joseph A. Wilmad and Charles E. Haines, both American immigrants from New York City.

They were both skilled craftsmen with experience in manufacturing and sold their products through retail stores. Wilmad’s first product was a small machine for making glass bottles, which they called the “Haines Bottle Machine”.

In the early 1900s, Wilmad began producing high quality glassware for home use. In 1928, Wilmad introduced its first commercial product: a small glass jar with a screw top. This jar was called the “Wilmad Air-Tight” jar.

Soon after, the company began manufacturing glass beakers, burettes, Erlenmeyers, and other laboratory glassware. Wilmad continued to focus on the research and development of new manufacturing techniques, materials, and products.

In the 1950s, Wilmad began developing and manufacturing precision glass containers for the chemical industry. In 1959, the company opened a new facility in Cranford, New Jersey that specialized in manufacturing precision glassware for the chemical, pharmaceutical, and biotechnology industries.

In the early 1960s, Wilmad developed its first low-expansion borosilicate glass, which was commonly used in the manufacture of laboratory glassware. The low-expansion properties of this glass minimized surface stress and made it less prone to thermal shock.

Wilmad developed the first glass rod thermometer in the late 1960s. The thermometer was a clear, hollow glass tube with colored stripes that changed color at specific temperature. It was accurate to within 0.2 degrees Fahrenheit and changed color at 55 degrees, the temperature at which most bacteria become inactive.

The company also developed the “Soft-Sided Cooler”, a portable cooler which kept vaccines, blood and other biological products at a safe temperature without electricity.

In the late 1980s, Wilmad increased its focus on the development of new and advanced chemical manufacturing techniques. This included new methods of bonding glass to metal such as copper, nickel, gold and their alloys. These techniques created a new line of products, such as vacuum manifolds, columns, distillation heads and other custom glass equipment for the chemical industry.

In 2000, Wilmad-LabGlass was acquired by the private equity firm, ACON Investments.
